DOMESTIC VIOLENCE and SEXUAL ASSAULT

Domestic Violence is a pattern of controlling behaviors carried out by one person in an intimate relationship to maintain power and control over the other. It is the belief by one person that they are ENTITLED to control another.

Types of domestic violence include:

  • Physical Abuse; hitting, slapping, grabbing, pushing, kicking, restraining.
  • Sexual Abuse; any unwanted sexual activity, forced sexual intercourse or contact.
  • Psychological Abuse; verbal abuse, emotional abuse, harassment, excessive possessiveness, isolation, deprivation of basic needs, destruction of personal property.

Oasis believes:

  • No one has the right to physically assault anyone.
  • No one deserves to be physically or emotionally abused.
  • No one has the right to use coercion, threats, intimidation or isolation to exert power and control over someone else.
  • Everyone has the right to live in a safe environment.

Oasis knows:

  • 1 out of 3 Michigan families experience some form of family violence.
  • Every 30 seconds a woman is beaten by her intimate partner.
  • Each year over 1 million American children are physically abused by their parents.
  • We also know that people stay in violent relationships for varied and complex reasons.
